Becoming a More Conscious Compulsive Eater

As a lifelong “binger” I don’t believe the inclination to binge ever really “goes away” – HOWEVER, for me, my desire to binge is an indication of something else (a need, or feeling that ought to be addressed). My relationship with food has changed – I have myriad practices that honor my intention (which is to be kind and nurturing towards my body) – for example, I cut almost all of my food into at least two parts – I eat the first part and then decide if I really want the second part. This is especially effective with sweets – I just sit and breathe a few breaths between pieces and often I choose not to eat the second half (or I take it to go and in my head I tell myself that I will enjoy it later). I am in a conscious relationship with the part of me that learned to eat compulsively – I have learned to honor and even love the part of me that I formerly saw as “flawed” – it is not always easy to apply compassion to myself, but that is the basis of my personal process. The BIG opportunity to apply compassion to myself occurs when I “slip” into an old, unhealthy, pattern around food. My friend Mitch helped me with this recently and I talk about what he told me in this video blog.
