Sometimes the problem with cooking healthy is that you’re just buying the wrong ingredients. There is so much to choose from that you don’t know what to get! After all, even in small grocery stores it is extremely common to see 20 kinds of pasta, 10 different brands of meat and about a million types of cookies. Where do you start if you don’t want to spend the entire day in the ice-cold abyss that is the supermarket in the summer?
We have found a great list of healthy products from Hungry Girl! This is a really comprehensive list, so we would like to share with you some of these products we’ve actually tried. Here are 5 of our favorite recipes that can easily be made healthier with a supermarket swap:
- Amazing Club Sandwiches: This sounds too good to be true, right? Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey Bacon is so delicious you won’t even miss the real thing. Pair that with Purdue Fit and Easy Turkey Breast plus low-calorie Weight Watchers Bread and you’ve got yourself a truly tasty lunch.

- Oreo Chocoholic Thickshake: We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again– this shake is best when it’s guilt-free. 100 Calorie pack Oreos don’t taste exactly like the originals, but when you add them to ice cream they give the shake just the crunch it needs. The recipe calls for Dreyer’s, but Edy’s Slow Churned is my personal fave.

- Vegetarian Breakfast Strata: Lighten up this strata with some of that wheat bread you used on your club sandwich. Then try using the Egg Beaters instead of eggs to take out cholesterol and fat. You might even want to try a Sargento Low-Fat cheese (it goes great with sandwiches too if you have leftovers).

- Chocolatey Peanut Butter Fudge: I know it sounds questionable, but Better’n Peanut Butter really is the way to go. For 2 tbsp. it only has 2 grams of fat and 100 calories!! It’s not quite as sticky as the original stuff, but the taste and thickness is about the same in my opinion. Don’t knock it ’til you try it.

- Asian-Inspired Salmon Tofu Salad: Starkist salmon really is the way to go–just make sure you get the kind in water, not oil. Also, be sure to buy a reduced-sodium soy sauce to cut out the salt, not the taste.
