Fish Oil

A few months ago, I went on a camping trip with some friends. As we were preparing the campfire for our first dinner of the trip, my friend pulled out a plastic bag with golden capsules. I asked him what the pills were, and he told me they were fish oil tablets. He claimed that the pills helped him think more clearly.
I was skeptical, so I decided to research fish oil to see if my friend was lying or not. As it turns out, he was correct. Fish oil tablets are filled with omega-3 fatty acids, a substance naturally found in fish that improves cholesterol levels and brain function.
Unlike my friend, I prefer to get my fish oil in a tastier form, namely from fish. Fish not only have the healthy omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, but also are a great source of lean protein. Add some fish oil to your diet with this quick and easy recipe.
Grilled Tandoori Salmon with Fresh Peach Chutney and Minted Yogurt Sauce

- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
- 6 8-oz skinless salmon steaks, about 1 1/4 inches thick

- Salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 4 medium peaches, peeled and cut into 1/4 inch dice
- 2 tablespoon finely grated fresh ginger
- 1 1/2 teaspoon honey
- 1 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh mint
- Pinch of ground cumin(toast the seeds first, then grind)
- Pinch of ground turmeric
- 1 cup plain low-fat yogurt
- Salt and freshly ground Pepper
Instructions
1. In a bowl, combine the olive oil and the chopped garlic. Rub the mixture all over the salmon. Sprinkle with ground garam masala and season lightly with salt. Cover and refrigerate.
2. In a non-reactive saucepan, dissolve the sugar in the vinegar, stirring over moderately high heat. Bring to boil and cook 1 minute.
3. Stir in the peaches and ginger and return to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring, until the fruit is softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a bowl.
4. Make the yogurt sauce: In a small bowl, combine the honey, mint, cumin and turmeric. Whisk in the yogurt until blended, season with salt and pepper, cover and refrigerate.
5. Prepare grill or preheat broiler: Grill or broil salmon steaks, turning once, for about 4 minutes each side, or until nicely charred or just cooked through. Transfer each of the salmon steaks to a warmed plate and remove the central bone with a fork.
Serve this with steamed Basmati or brown rice.

I would like to know the difference between Tilapia versus Basa, as far as Omega 3-6-9 ? also, I read that I should not buy these fishes coming from China or Thailand ? Plus some recipes, I do not own a barbeque. Please your comments would be welcome. Thanks, Paulette

Paulette,
Thanks for the questions. In terms of fatty acids, basa, a Southeast Asian variety of catfish, is a better source of omega-3 fatty acids than tilapia. Omega-3 fatty acids are the good fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids cause hypertension and heart disease. Tilapia is actually thought to be a rather poor source of omega-3s and is actually high in omega-6 fatty acids. Basa has a moderate amount of omega-3 fatty acids as compared with other fish.
The issues with basa and other fish raised in China and Southeast Asia is over relaxed environmental standards and little oversight in their fishing industries, leading fish raised there to be exposed to contaminants. However, basa generally has a low mercury content. Now, as basa becomes more popular, fisherman in countries like Australia, countries with better environmental regulations, are starting to raise basa.
