Healthy Back-To-School Lunches

The summer is winding down and soon the kids will be returning to school. Often, schools can be filled with unhealthy temptations for kids. Many schools have vending machines stocked with bad-for-you snacks. Currently, schools cannot legally sell foods with little nutrition. However, snacks such as brownies and candy do not fall under such guidelines. An estimated one third of U.S. children are overweight or obese. Overweight and obese children are more likely to develop heart disease and diabetes later in life.

Help your kids avoid the unhealthy food temptations present at many schools by making for them delicious healthy lunches. Granted, many kids can be picky eaters, limiting healthy eating options. Don’t try too hard to push foods and recipes on picky eaters. It may only turn them away from healthy eating. If your picky eater only likes a few healthy food options, then run with them. For many children, the best food options are the ones that soothe their sweet tooth but in a more healthy way. Choose fruit over candy and baked chips over fried chips.

Here are some of our favorite healthy lunchtime treats that your kids will love. Start with customizable Healthy Vegetable Pockets filled with yummy cream cheese to keep your kids focused. Instead of chips, try Cinnamon Raisin Trail Mix with enough sweetness to appeal to kids. Avoid soda and make Lavendar Pink Lemonade, a healthier sweet drink.

    This is a great post! We have a client ( First Juice http://www.firstjuice.com ) who makes GREAT juice which is a great alternative to soda to pack in lunches. It is organic and delicious, and the bottles have neat squirt tops, so they are re-useable and easy to store/use throughout the school day!
