I’m letting you in on a little secret. I eat superfoods for breakfast everyday. Well, Monday through Friday, and the weekends are up in the air. I make a superfood shake every morning and either chug it before I hit the road or bring it to work with me if I’m not very hungry in the wee hours of the morning.
Superfoods are a classification of foods that pack nutrients like vitamins, protein and complex carbs all in one. The idea is that your body craves less when its needs for vitamins and nutrients are satisfied by super foods. According to raw-food guru, David Wolfe, some of the best superfoods for you are goji berries, hempseed, cacao beans (raw chocolate), maca, spirulina, bee products and many others. For an explanation of these superfoods visit Marly’s blog on the 6 superfoods you’ve never tried.
So taking the advice of some smart and healthy people, I’ve been implementing these superfoods into my daily diet. Here’s a recipe for my favorite breakfast shake. All of these products can be found at the local whole food store.
Superfood Breakfast Shake:
1/3 cup raw organic cacao nibs
1/3 cup organic goji berries
sprinkle of bee pollen
sprinkle of hempseed
1 tablespoon raw honey
1 cup frozen fruit – I usually use whatever is on sale. Mangos, Blueberries, Strawberries, Blackberries, they’re all fantastic!
Fresh fruit is even better, but I recommend adding ice so your shake is not warm!
Water
Ice
Blend until smooth.
The shake will be a bit textured and you might have bits of chocolate stuck in your teeth, just to keep in mind before you head to your first morning meeting!
In addition to the superfood shake, I take spirulina caplets that give me a good energy boost that lasts throughout the day.
