Holiday Diet & Fitness Tips

Now that we’re officially in the holiday season, I’m sure everyone’s “plate” is full of upcoming holiday parties, dinners, busy shopping and eating on the go. Some of you may have surrendered yourselves to gain a few pounds between now and New Year’s. But if you’re still holding out hope that you can stay in control this holiday season, follow these quick and easy tips for trimming your waistline while you trim the tree.

According to the NutritionData weight loss blog, you should definitely start each morning with breakfast during the holidays (probably all the time, but especially now). Other helpful weight loss tips include:

  • Bring light snacks with you to work, like pieces of fruit or whole grain crackers to snack on between meals, so you’re not tempted to grab all those holiday cookies that you coworkers have brought.
  • Don’t eat too late. If you eat your (healthy salad) lunch too late in the day, you may be tempted to fill the down time with sugary holiday treats.
  • Bring your lunch when you can. If you go out to lunch with coworkers, make smart decisions like eating a salad with the dressing on the side.
  • Try to eat your dinner before 8pm so you don’t go to bed on an empty stomach.

If you’re at the office and looking for ways to burn a few extra calories, follow FaveDiets’ tips on the 10 Ways to be Healthy at the Office, here’s the first five:

  1. Always take the stairs. If you need a bathroom break, use the bathroom on a different floor for the extra walking.
  2. Take a 15-minute yoga break mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Use these 10 office yoga exercises if you don’t have a studio to run off to.
  3. Stand when you are on the phone, if you can. Shifting weight between feet is good for you.
  4. Keep useful office supplies on the top shelf so you have to stand, walk across the room, and reach to get them, with frequency.
  5. Pack your lunch so you’re not tempted to go through the drive through everyday and get fast food.

Stay positive this holiday season, you can stay in control of your eating habits if you just implement small changes that will aid in your success. Treat yourself once in a while, but don’t make it an everyday occurrence. Happy Holidays!
