How to Make Hot Cocoa: A Healthier Hot Cocoa Recipe

Now that it’s officially December, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that it’s snowing outside today. I may not be surprised by this development, but I can’t say I’m pleased. For some reason, I’ve had a dislike for snow ever since I started shoveling it and driving in it icon smile How to Make Hot Cocoa: A Healthier Hot Cocoa Recipe

As a kid though, I used to love snow (what kid doesn’t love making snowmen and having snowball fights?). On cold snowy days, I always crave a warm drink. While I usually prefer hot apple cider (you can find my recipe over at Jackie’s Kitchen) sometimes I get nostalgic for those hot cocoa packets. This version, though, will show you how to make hot cocoa that not only tastes better than those hot cocoa packets, but is one of the tastiest healthy hot cocoa recipes around. Enjoy!

How to Make Hot Cocoa Mix at Home

Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar substitute (use organic raw sugar if you’d prefer the real thing)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup non-dairy cream powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt or salt substitute
  • 2 3/4 cups instant nonfat milk powder
  • 1 cup miniature marshmallows, if desired (I’m not a fan, but I know some folks just love marshmallows in their hot chocolate)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine powdered sugar substitute, cocoa powder, non-dairy creamer, and salt. Stir in milk powder and marshmallows, if desired.
  2. Pour into a 4-cup container with a tight-fitting lid. Seal container. Label with date and contents. Store in a cool dry place. Use within 6 months. Makes about 4 cups.
  3. To make hot cocoa, stir 3 to 4 tablespoons mix into one cup or mug of hot water to make 1 serving.

Note: I love this hot cocoa mix because it’s delicious and super easy to make. Plus, this is way cheaper (and healthier) than buying lots of those hot cocoa packets. If you like your hot cocoa recipes with a little kick, try adding some cayenne pepper, dried ginger or dried cinnamon to the mix.

Question: What is your favorite cold weather drink?

OMG I LOVE cocoa! I drink it all year around. I am so happy that there is a healthier alternative, so I won’t feel as guilty drinking it!
