It’s hot outside, so you’re reaching for cold ingredients, right? Well, you might be slurping a frozen Starbucks drink or licking a frosty ice cream cone, but chances are you aren’t shopping in the frozen foods section. Since it’s summer we should be taking advantage of fresh, seasonal ingredients, but those can be expensive. Especially when trying to save money in these tough economic times, it pays to buy some frozen ingredients.
According to Dietician Deanna Minich, frozen fruits are great for smoothies or desserts. She is also a proponent for using frozen veggies in casseroles, stir-fries or as a side-dish. Minich says frozen produce actually retains a majority of its nutritional value–and at a fraction of the cost!
Here are some great recipe ideas using frozen fruits and vegetables:
- Triple Berry Shake
- All Vegetable Pasta Salad
- Tart Strawberry-Grapefruit Sorbet
- Banana-Mango Frozen Yogurt

If you don’t even have time for cooking, frozen foods can still save you! Instead of wasting money on eating out, there are healthy frozen alternatives that will fill up your stomach and your wallet. Dietician Jessica Butcher warns to beware of the sodium count, which should be below 700 mg. She suggests looking for meals with ingredients you can pronounce, like whole-grains or vegetables.
