Portion Control

Posted by Caley on March 13th, 2009 at 05:45am

The single biggest tool in weight management is portion control. Mireille Guiliano, the author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, explained how French women stay thin, while loving croissants and other indulgent foods through daily portion control. Even small changes, such as enjoying a walk or vegetable-based lunch after that croissant, add up to big changes. The overall idea is not to deprive yourself of your favorites foods but to practice portion control and really savor your food. Eat very slowly and allow your body to tell you when it is full.

Still, for some of us unaccustomed to portion control, the amount of food appropriate to your daily needs may be surprising. The giant portions at restaurants certainly do not help!  To help with visualizing what appropriate meals look like when on a diet, Diet Blog put together a sample of 300-400 calories meals. This is a great idea to help people with portion control.

Personally, when dishing out dinner at night, I give myself about half as much as what I give my very-active boyfriend who does brazilian jujitsu three times a week. I always stop when I start to feel the slightest bit full and if I’m still hungry after a full five minutes, I eat a little more. Inevitably, my boyfriend ends up finishing off my plate too every night.
