Product Review: Kettle Brand Baked Potato Chips

Recently, the good folks at Kettle Brand Chips were nice enough to send us a few bags of their baked kettle chips to try. Needless to say, we here at FaveDiets HQ were pretty excited. After all, potato chips and America go together almost as well as apple pie and America. The only problem with most potato chips is that they are just loaded with fat, salt and empty calories. Luckily, Kettle Brand baked chips have 65 percent less fat – always a super bonus. And while the bags did look great as part of a potato chip display, would their flavor stand up to muster? Here’s what our official taste testers had to say:
I love chips–I like a little salty crunchy something with my turkey sandwich or my chicken salad. But I’m forever watching my calories and reading labels, especially in the “I need to lose a few pounds” mode that I’m currently in. So I was thrilled to see that Kettle Chips had a baked version of several of their chip flavors. I love Salt and Vinegar chips and love Kettle Chips’ baked version, because I get all the flavor that I want with fewer calories and fat grams. Significantly fewer fat grams. In fact, as I looked over their nutritional information, the baked version of the Sea Salt and Vinegar chips has 30 fewer calories and 6 fewer grams per serving. If you’re counting points, you’re looking at 4 points for a serving of the regular version and only 2 points for a serving of the baked version. For me, this is a substantial difference. The baked chips must either be smaller or weigh less, because I get 20 chips per 1 oz. serving of baked chips rather than the 13 chips per 1 oz. of their regular chips. But even if they are smaller, I feel like I get more of them per serving. As for the flavor, the Sea Salt and Vinegar is strong, but not bitingly strong, as I’ve experienced with other salt and vinegar chips.
Finally a baked chip I can get on board with! Kettle chips have always been my favorite, but I’ve always had to watch how many I eat because of the fat content. Most baked chips completely lose their potato flavor. These chips are low-fat and maintain the integrity of a quality natural potato chip.
These salt and pepper chips are seriously addictive! The first kettle-type chip I’ve ever liked! I love that the chips are thin and crispy, not hard like other kettle-type chips. Get me more!
Simply put, these chips are awesome! They maintain the crunch and flavor of fried kettle chips but with way less fat. They also don’t have a greasy consistency, which is a big plus in my book. I liked that these chips also don’t shy away from strong flavor. The Salt and Fresh Ground Pepper chips had a great spicy bite to them, and their Salt and Vinegar had a terrific tart vinegar flavor that I could not resist. If I was to indulge on some potato chips, I would definitely reach from some of these chips. Truly a great find.
So there you have it! Our taste testers were fans of Kettle Brand baked potato chips. I guess we’ll be seeing Kettle Brand on the potato chip display rack at FaveDiets.com.
Have you ever tried Kettle Brand baked potato chips? What did you think? Did you love the chips or did you hate the chips? Why? We want to hear what you have to say!

I rarely eat potato chips, but when the craving comes, these are the only potato chips I eat, in part because nearly all of their flavors are gluten-free, but mostly because of their excellent crunch and perfect ratio of salt and healthy oils!

I didn’t know they were gluten free. I guess that’s another reason to like them. Just curious, are there other good gluten free chips out there that you particularly like? I think Food Should Taste Good chips are gluten free as well, and tasty too.

Well, there’s so much out there now. Many of the major brands have gluten-free lists available and so many Doritos varieties, for example, are gluten-free. But, I tend to stick with the smaller brands, like “Mary’s Gone” and the “Pirate brand”. There’s a recent line out called “Rice Works” which is quite good. “Mission” brand has excellent gluten-free tortilla chips. Several brands now have pretzels (“Glutino” are the best I’ve tried, but expensive) and I just located some graham crackers by “Kinnikinnik’s” but have yet to try them. It’s all going to depend upon the type of snack you’re going for, how much you’re willing to pay, and where you are shopping.
I’ve recently written a “favorite GF products” post here for other ideas:

Nice Crunch and texture. Like how low fat but too salty for my taste. I tried the regular salted chips. All I taste is the salt, can’t taste the potato flavor
