Six Ways to Exercise at the Office

Finding time to exercise when you have a full-time job may seem difficult but it’s not impossible. Exercise is so important for those trying to lose or maintain weight, and does not have to interfere with your other daily activities. In a recent study, those that broke up exercise throughout the day (2 15-minute sessions or 3 10-minute sessions) showed the same weight loss results as though that engaged in one continuous exercise session (1 30-minute session). You can exercise for just 10 minutes before work, after work and during your lunch break for the same results as working out for a half-hour after work!
To help you achieve more exercise during work hours, here are five ideas.
- When you are on the phone or doing other activities, do leg lifts. Lift one leg under your desk and spell out the letters of the alphabet, the slower the better. Try not to let your leg fall until you have completed the alphabet. This can be difficult so don’t worry if you cannot complete the entire alphabet your first time. If anyone notices what you are doing, explain you are exercising!
- Suck in and hold your stomach muscles tight for a few minutes. Repeat throughout the day. No one will know you are doing this exercise and it can really help slim your waistline!
- Always take the stairs. If you need a bathroom break, go to a bathroom on a different floor.
- Fidget more. Try to move around more when you are working at your desk. Even just standing while you make a phone call can help!
- Take a walk after eating lunch. If it’s nice outside, go for a walk outside. If it’s freezing, walk at the mall or climb the stairs!
- Follow our Yoga at Work series. Get your co-workers to participate in a short 10-minute yoga break mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
