The 10 Worst Foods You Can Eat

Posted by Mindy on February 27th, 2009 at 09:14am

Caley recently posted about 10 of the best foods you can eat, a list loaded with nutritional, vitamin-rich options. But what about the foods you should be avoiding at all costs? Every year the Center for Science in the Public Interest publishes its list of the 10 worst foods. Are any of these items making it into your grocery cart or dinner table? Next time, think twice.

10 Worst Foods You Can Eat (From CSPI)

1. Pepperidge Farm’s Roasted White Meat Chicken Premium Pot Pie has 510 calories and 9 grams of saturated fat. Not so bad, right? Well, maybe not, except those figures are for HALF of a pie. Eating the whole thing will set you back over 1,000 calories and 18 grams of saturated fat.

2. Romano’s Macaroni Grill Spaghetti and Meatballs with Meat Sauce has a shocking 2,430 calories, 57 grams of saturated fat and 5,290 mg of sodium. The calories and fat total more than two Macaroni Grill rib-eye dinners.

3. Progresso Traditional, Vegetable Classics, and Rich & Hearty Soups will fill your daily salt quota in half a can. Progresso does offer a reduced-sodium line that contains up to 50% less sodium.

4. Dove Ice Cream packs 300 calories and an average of 11 grams of fat into a 1/2 cup serving. Go for a low-fat alternative.

5. It’s not surprise that a slice of Cheesecake Factory Chris’ Outrageous Chocolate Cake has 1,380 calories and 32 tsp. of sugar, in addition to 33 grams of saturated fat and 5 grams of trans fat. The 5 inch high cake slice weighs in at 3/4 of a lb. and is the nutritional equivalent of two McDonald’s quarter pounders and a large order of fries.

6. Often mistaken for health food, smoothies can pack a dangerous amount of calories and sugar. The Grape Expectations II “snack right” option from Smoothie King contains 550 calories in the 20 oz. and well over 1,000 in the 40 oz.

7. Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter Popcorn Snack Size Bags contains 11 grams of saturated fat, 7 of which is trans fat. And these are the snack size! For a healthier version, pop your own and only use a small amount of butter.

8. Starbucks Venti (20 oz.) Caffe Mocha has 450 calories and 13 grams of bad fat. If you can’t miss your coffee fix, start the morning off right and order a tall with non-fat milk and no whipped cream.

9. The popular Chipotle Chicken Burrito (including tortilla, rice, beans, cheese, chicken, sour cream and salsa) rolls in at 1,040 calories and 16.5 grams of saturated fat, the equivalent of three 6-inch Subway steak and cheese sandwiches. The burrito also contains 2,500 mg of sodium.

10. Cold Stone Creamery’s Gotta Have It Founder’s Favorite with ice cream, pecans, brownie pieces, fudge and caramel has 1,600 calories and 42 grams of saturated fat, essentially the equivalent of five regular scoops of ice cream.
