What is the definition of a healthy diet? Depends who you ask. Basically, a healthy diet ensures you get plenty of good stuff (fiber, protein, vitamins, etc.) and less bad stuff (saturated fats, sugar, salt, calories, etc.). If you want to start eating healthy but don’t know where to begin, then let this guide help you. Here are 6 recipes that show you how to cook a basic healthy dish and why you should cook with certain ingredients.
Honey Mustard Glazed Chicken – This recipe courtesy the blog Mindika Moments shows you how to cook a healthy and flavorful piece of chicken. Chicken is an incredibly lean source of animal protein that is a great source of B vitamins. Cook chicken using a low fat cooking method (saute or bake are two good options) and flavor with a low-fat sauce and steamed veggies.
Steamed Fish with Vegetables – This recipe courtesy The Ultimate Fishing Blog shows you how to cook fish. Fish has numerous health benefits, including reducing the risk of arthritis and depression. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce blood clots and the risk for heart disease. Steaming and grilling are two ideal cooking methods for fish. Use a lighter sauce and pair with brown rice.
Snickerdoodles – This recipe from the I’m So Hungry, I Could Eat My Blog shows you how to make a healthier dessert. Since desserts are normally chock full of fat, sugar and calories, eating healthier desserts is key if you need to satisfy your sweet tooth. For making desserts, try as much as possible to get the sweetness from fruit. Use artificial sweeteners and oil-based butter substitutes to decrease the amount of calories. Desserts don’t contribute to a healthy diet, but a healthier dessert ensures that you eat fewer calories.
In A Jiffy Spelt Veggie Burgers – This recipe courtesy the blog Oh She Glows shows you how to make a delicious vegetarian dish. Meat eaters may not believe this, but eating vegetarian meals a few nights a week is great for your health. Vegetables have no cholesterol and little fat and sugar. Eating vegetarian helps boost your immune system and decreases the risk of developing many cancers. This quick easy meal is a great jumping-off point for making future vegetarian meals.
Sweet Potato Chips – This recipe courtesy the blog All From Scratch shows you how to make a healthy snack. When you get hungry in the middle of the day, avoid chips, candies and other high sugar, high fat foods. Snacking can be a huge source of excess calories. If you must reach for a snack, choose lighter fare like these sweet potato chips or simply an apple.
Spicy Sweet Potato Soup – This recipe courtesy the blog The Frugal Foodies shows you how to make healthy soup. Eating soup before a meal makes you less likely to overeat during the meal. Soup is a great way to incorporate more tasty veggies and water into your diet. Plus, making soup is one of the best cooking methods for keeping food nutrients in the dish.
