The Yoga of Weight Release

Today I would like to discuss the connection between yoga and weight release. I am presently developing a special class with long time yoga teacher Tom Jermain called The Yoga of Weight Release. We are presenting an introductory community night at City Yoga in Los Angeles next week and hopefully enrolling a full class for a workshop in July. Despite practicing yoga myself several times a week for the past year and a half, exploring the connection between the principles of my Weight Release Program and the principles of yoga has been wonderful and enlightening.
The class is built around activating the breath to become conscious, aware and present – the student’s “state of being” is the doorway to weight release.
Next, we review the connection between patterns of behavior around food and needs. The students will begin to become more aware of how they may have been using food to meet emotional and spiritual needs.
A guided meditation process called “Getting in Your Body” will help students align with their vessel – the physical body that they have been overfeeding or filling with unhealthy foods.
Students will move through some gentle poses as we explore a principle called “Stretching Your Self-perception”. As students stretch their physical comfort zone they explore the relationship they have with comfort (discomfort) and food.
The poses change slightly as the class observes the connection between strengthening the body and Strengthening Personal Commitment. This is where the participants look to establish a positive, life affirming, motivation to make changes in their lives.
The final part of the class is called “Establishing A Self-Care Practice”. Weight Release occurs when one practices making self-honoring choices regularly until self-care behaviors become healthy habits.
I have strongly recommend yoga to my weight release clients for some time now, but developing this class has affirmed, more than ever, the important role yoga can play in a persons weight release journey.
