Top 10 Easy Healthy Recipes

Weight loss and better eating habits are probably 2 of the most common New Year’s resolutions. If your resolution is to lose a few pounds or to maintain your current healthy weight, good eating habits are absolutely essential. My New Year’s eating resolutions include consuming even less meat (I’m moving into a mostly vegetarian diet with the occasional piece of fish or chicken) and snacking on nuts and vegetables instead of sweets. Did you know that eating a handful of nuts 30 minutes before your meal can help you lose weight? It’s true! A handful of nuts tells your body to start sending satiation signals to your brain before you start the actual meal. In other words, that handful of nuts can keep you from over-eating.

On the theme of positive snacking, here are my Top 10 easy healthy recipes:

  1. Corn and Black Bean Salsa- Make your own whole-wheat tortilla chips to enjoy with this salsa. Preheat the oven to 350,  cut the tortillas into wedges, toss with a touch of heart-healthy oil and bake for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Garlic Almonds- If you are bored with plain almonds, create a twist for snack-time.
  3. Spice Glazed Pumpkin Seeds- If you use fresh pumpkin for any recipes in the late fall or winter (and i recommend that you, pumpkin soup and pumpkin curry are both delicious), keep the seeds for this great snack food.
  4. Applesauce and Oatmeal Cookies- With a touch of sugar and applesauce instead of oil, these cookies are a great way to satisfy normal sweet cravings.
  5. Baked Sweet Potato Fries- With more fiber than regular potatoes and MUCH less fat when baked in the oven, these fries make a great side for a healthy meal or a yummy afternoon snack.
  6. Pickled Asparagus- Love pickles? Why not try making your own with different vegetables such as asparagus, carrot spears or even radishes? Though, go easy on pickles for snacking because they are generally quite salty!
  7. Apple Kiwi Salad- Make up a big bowl of fruit salad at the beginning of the week and you will have a sweet, healthy and super-easy snack throughout the week. I also enjoy pairing kiwi with banana slices.
  8. Vegetable Hummus- Make your own protein-rich hummus and enjoy with vegetable spears (celery, carrots, pepper slices) or whole-wheat crackets.
  9. Whole-Wheat Apple Date Muffins- These fat-free, low-sugar muffins will leave you full of energy.
  10. Strawberry-Banana Soy Milkshake- Start your day off with this delicious and healthy milkshake. Use frozen berries or fresh seasonal berries.
